CONTAINER FIRE INCIDENT – Coconut-Shell Charcoal Cargo

We were engaged to investigate and oversee a container fire incident involving several units loaded with coconut-shell charcoal. Our assessment determined that the cargo had undergone self-heating, a known risk associated with improperly processed charcoal products. This spontaneous heating ultimately led to ignition while the containers were still on board the vessel. Following identification of the cause, the affected containers were safely off-loaded from the vessel. We monitored the fire brigade’s operations as they extinguished the remaining hotspots, ensuring that all actions were conducted safely and in accordance with emergency protocols. Once secured, the damaged cargo was subsequently discharged and disposed of properly, in coordination with terminal authorities and the relevant stakeholders.
This case demonstrates our capability in managing hazardous cargo events, coordinating with emergency responders, and ensuring safe disposal procedures during maritime incidents.
